Flying

How do I fly?

Hold your iPhone wide. Your left thumb steers: put it down anywhere on the left half and drag. Your right thumb works the buttons at the right edge: fire, boost, the warp and the rocket, with the arc beside them setting your speed.

How do I look around?

Drag on the right half of the screen, clear of the buttons, to turn the view round your ship. Let go, and it swings back behind you. The camera button at the top pulls the view out wide, to show the space round you and your fleet.

How does the warp work?

The warp jumps you and your whole fleet kilometres across the war. When a strike is on, it can lock onto one of its aces and jump you straight to it. It needs charging between jumps: every strike's alarm and every ace you shoot down fill it.

How do I use the rocket?

Tap the rocket button. Time slows to a third and the camera rides the rocket: steer it with your left thumb, as you steer the ship, into an ace. One hit is enough. Tap again to burst it where it is. You carry two, and they come back over time; each strike's alarm and each ace you down give you one sooner.

What can hurt my ship?
  • Enemy fire, above all an ace's.
  • Suns: their heat burns a ship that flies too close, and their surface is fatal. A blue giant reaches further and burns hotter.
  • Pulsars: their beams sweep round on a beat, and hurt to be caught in.
  • Black holes: they pull you in, and tear apart anything that crosses the edge.

You see and hear each danger before it hurts. Your shield comes back while you keep out of trouble.

What happens if I'm shot down?

You relaunch by one of your blue stars, and your fleet waits there. Losing your ship never loses the war, though it costs you a medal.

Can I play with a game controller?

Yes. The left stick flies and the right stick looks round your ship. A or the right trigger fires, B or the left trigger boosts, Y warps, X fires a rocket, and the shoulder buttons roll.

The war

How do I take a star?

Your stars are blue. Fly past them and their ships rally to you; then dive at a rival star, and your fleet strikes it with you. The screen shows how many ships the star takes to win: bring more than that, and it turns blue.

My stars are under attack. What do I do?

A strike at one of your stars is announced with a countdown, and led by aces. Warp to it and shoot the aces down: each one you down takes its wing out of the war, and once they're all down the strike breaks. An arrow at the edge of the screen points to every ace.

Where's the map?

The card in the corner shows the whole war: every star, whose it is, and the strikes on the way.

What do the different stars do?
  • Blue giant: the biggest star. It makes ships fast for whoever holds it, and its heat reaches far.
  • Red dwarf: small and tough, slow to make ships and hard to take.
  • Twin stars: two stars circling each other.
  • Pulsar: nobody's. Its beams sweep round on a beat.
  • Black hole: nobody's. It pulls at everything near it. One of them wanders.

Campaign

How do the wars unlock?

Winning a war opens the next. The first, First Light, is a short guided war that shows you how to play, one thing at a time. After it, Play opens the campaign's map, where you pick any war you've opened.

When is a war won?

The moment your rivals hold no stars. A few wars have a goal instead, marked with a ★: hold your marked stars for a time, take a marked star before your rival does, or be the first to hold so many stars. The goal shows as the war starts, and on screen as you fly.

How do I earn medals?

Each war has three: win it, win it under its par time, and win it without being shot down. Your best time on each war shows on the map.

What is Uncharted?

A war on a new map, any time you like. It opens once you've won the first war, beside Fly on the campaign's map.

I'm stuck on a war. Any tips?

Try Relaxed rivals in Settings for a gentler war. On any war: gather a full fleet before you dive, take the stars nearest yours first, and answer strikes at your stars quickly, before they land. The rocket is made for aces.

Settings

How do I change the difficulty?

In Settings, set Rivals to Relaxed, Standard or Challenging. It sets how sharp the rivals are, in every war.

Can I change how the ship steers?

Yes. In Settings, Steering makes small moves of your thumb turn the ship less or more: Gentle, Standard or Sharp. Invert up and down flips it, so you pull down to climb, as in a flight simulator.

Can I change the music?

In Settings › Soundtrack, pick Warm Pulse, Drift, Tide or Nightfall, or Shuffle for a different one each time. Music and effects each have their own volume.

Can I turn off vibration?

Yes. Turn off Vibration in Settings, and the game won't vibrate at all.

How do I start over?

In Settings, tap Reset progress. Every war becomes unwon again, and your medals and best times are cleared. Your settings stay.

Will my progress move to a new iPhone?

Your progress is kept on your iPhone, so it moves with it when you restore a new iPhone from a backup of the old one. Deleting the game deletes your progress.

Do I need an internet connection?

No. Umbra plays entirely on your iPhone.
